Hydrogen is now online on construction sites in rail yards and industrial corridors. And we're starting to see how this clean fuel can reshape the foundation of modern energy. Hi, I'm Steve Hill, CEO of NewHydrogen, with this week's top hydrogen news. Let's begin in the United Kingdom, where a major construction milestone is making headlines. The world's first hydrogen-p powered digger is now operating on the lower temp's crossing, one of Britain's largest infrastructure projects.
Developed by JCB, the 20ton excavator runs entirely on hydrogen fuel cells and has already prevented more than a ton of CO2 emissions compared to a similar diesel unit. You might remember our coverage of King Charles III's visit to JCB headquarters earlier this year, where he personally viewed their zero emissions backho in action. That royal visit drew global attention to JCB's work and showed that hydrogen-p powered construction equipment is more than a concept.
Now this digger is in full operation and JCB is proving that hydrogen can deliver real power in harsh real world conditions. The UK plans to phase out diesel on construction sites by 2027. And this project shows that hydrogen can keep critical infrastructure moving while cutting emissions where it matters most. We recently completed Our ThermoLoop benchtop unit, demonstrating continuous looping thermmochemical hydrogen production using only heat and water. No fossil fuels, no electricity. With that concept now proven, we're moving towards our next milestone, a larger lab demonstration unit. Thermal Loop is being designed to tap waste heat from power plants, nuclear reactors, and other sources to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. Our goal is to produce the world's cheapest clean hydrogen and enable industries like construction transportation and manufacturing to decarbonize without the high cost of electricity.
Now to the rail sector, where hydrogen is transforming legacy infrastructure. All Stum has begun testing a hydrogen-powered version of its diesel shunting locomotives in Europe. These smaller engines are used in railards and factories where electrification is often impractical. The conversion replaces the diesel engine with a fuel cell system enabling low-noise zero emission operation while extending the life of existing equipment. Alolum has already proven hydrogen and passenger services with its Kuradia Island trains, which logged more than 180,000 km in Germany.
The company now sees retrofit projects as a faster path to scaling hydrogen rail across Europe and beyond. But while progress continues, a new report from Hydrogen Insight highlights a challenge that could reshape the global hydrogen race. According to the organization, the European Union will miss its 2030 clean hydrogen supply target by more than 90%.
Slow permitting, high electrolyzer costs, and delayed infrastructure investments have created a widening gap between policy goals and production capacity. Analysts warned that without faster innovation and diversification of hydrogen production methods, many EU countries will fall far short of their targets. This shortfall underscores the urgent need for new technologies, especially those that can generate cheap, clean hydrogen from heat rather than expensive renewable electricity.
