From sustainable jet fuel to garbage trucks to next-gen engines, hydrogen offtakers are lining up. The only thing that's missing, enough green hydrogen at the right price. Hi, I'm Steve Hill, CEO of NewHydrogen, with this week's top hydrogen news.
First up, a bold move in aviation fuel. In Texas, a new facility is being built to produce sustainable aviation fuel using hydrogen as one of its core ingredients. It's part of a growing trend among clean fuel producers who see hydrogen not just as a fuel itself, but as a versatile building block for carbon-neutral alternatives to gasoline, diesel, and jet fuels. The final product works with existing aircraft engines and airport infrastructure, which means airlines can cut emissions dramatically without reinventing the entire system.
As policy shifts and subsidies face political headwinds here in the United States, many of these projects are looking globally and particularly to Europe, where hydrogen adoption remains more consistent and economically strategic.
Still, whether in Texas or Toulouse, these facilities all have one thing in common. They're waiting on access to enough clean hydrogen to scale.
Next, hydrogen is headed for the curb. At Waste Expo in Las Vegas, manufacturers of heavy-duty trucks made it clear hydrogen-powered garbage trucks are no longer hypothetical. They're tested, viable, and entering the procurement stage. Fleets in California have already trialled these trucks on real routes, hauling full loads across challenging terrain. Drivers report diesel-level performance without emissions and without the range anxiety that can come with battery electric options.
Now, Green Waste has placed its first commercial order. 12 hydrogen-fueled refuse trucks from New Way and Hyzon, scheduled to hit streets in the Bay Area by the end of 2025. And
Finally, the future of flight takes another step. Engineers at RTX, which is the parent company of Pratt and Whitney, have completed a major round of testing hydrogen-powered jet turbines. The system dramatically cuts nitrogen oxide emissions and captures water vapor from the exhaust. And that takes us one step closer to clean flight at scale. The work is being backed by both United States and European research agencies and has led to new initiatives exploring hydrogen storage and turboprop applications.
These projects span different sectors, continents, and timelines, but they all share a dependency on clean hydrogen, and they're all being held back by the same thing: cost and availability.
