What does it take to fly at Mach 12? Hi, I'm Steve Hill, CEO of NewHydrogen with this week's top hydrogen news. Let's start at the frontier of aviation.

According to Simple Flying, engineers are exploring a hydrogen-powered hypersonic jet that could reach speeds up to Mach 12. At those speeds, traditional jet fuel becomes a constraint, while hydrogen offers a unique advantage due to its high energy per unit mass. This makes it one of the few fuels capable of supporting sustained hypersonic flight and could open the door to entirely new categories of air travel.

A flight traveling at Mach 12, or about 9,200 mph, from New York to London would take about 30 to 45 minutes. At that speed, the roughly 3,500-mile journey would be completed almost instantly compared to the 7-hour average for commercial airlines today.

At the same time, hydrogen is already proving itself in more conventional aircraft. New Atlas reports that Unither Bioelectronique, working with Robinson Helicopter, has completed a piloted test flight of a hydrogen-powered helicopter using a fuel cell system. Helicopters place strict demands on weight, safety, and reliability. So, demonstrating a successful hydrogen-powered flight in real conditions represents meaningful progress towards practical adoption. And not to be forgotten, hydrogen continues to make waves in the maritime sector.

According to Ocean News and Technology, hydrogen is gaining momentum in shipping with new vessel designs and propulsion systems moving closer to commercial deployment. Maritime transport has long been one of the hardest sectors to decarbonize due to long distances and heavy energy requirements. And hydrogen is increasingly seen as one of the few scalable options. Taken together, these developments show hydrogen advancing across multiple fronts, From extreme-speed aviation to practical aircraft and large-scale shipping, the demand for hydrogen is expanding rapidly. But, there's a fundamental issue that remains unresolved. Cheap, clean hydrogen does not exist today.

Hydrogen can be produced at relatively low cost using methane, but that comes with significant carbon emissions. It can also be produced cleanly using electrolysis, but at a much higher cost. The world wants hydrogen, but for it to truly serve as a solution, it must be both clean and economically viable at scale. From hydrogen flight to global shipping, the demand for hydrogen is growing. But, there's a technical bottleneck. For these applications to truly scale, clean hydrogen must be cost-competitive with fossil fuels.

Today's methods rely on expensive high-grade electricity, which keeps prices too high for wide adoption. That's exactly the problem we're solving at NewHydrogen.
