From Mach 5 to micro reactors, hydrogen is breaking boundaries. Hi, I'm Steve Hill, CEO of NewHydrogen, with this week's top hydrogen news. First up, the European Space Agency has launched a new research initiative for horizontal launch hypersonic vehicles. This program, which is called Invictus, is exploring hydrogen fueled propulsion to reach speeds up to Mach 5 or 3,836 mph. ESA has partnered with UK- based engineering company Fraser Nash to develop a fully reusable experimental vehicle using a hydrogen-fueled pre-cooled air breathing propulsion system. This represents a major validation of hydrogen technology, showing that space agencies see it as the key to unlocking the next generation of aerospace innovation.
Next up, Zero Aavia has secured nine new patents in 2025, bringing their total to 45 granted with another 250 in the pipeline. These patents cover breakthrough technologies, including high temperature fuel cells, advanced thermal systems, and innovative refueling setups that make hydrogen fuel cells more powerful and compact for aircraft. With aviation leaders accelerating their hydrogen programs, we're witnessing a clear shift from experimental technology to commercial reality.
Finally, the Department of Energy is preparing three micro reactor experiments at Idaho National Laboratory in 2026. These compact reactors from Westinghouse and Radiant are designed to generate up to 20 megigigawatts of power and will produce significant waste heat.
That heat can be used for thermmochemical hydrogen production instead of relying on expensive electricity. The timing is important. President Trump has issued executive orders to speed micro reactor development, accelerate licensing, streamline reviews, and quadruple nuclear capacity by 2050. With this surge in nuclear innovation and development in hydrogen technologies like ThermoLoop, pairing reactor waste heat with clean hydrogen production may soon become practical. This demonstration marks a key step in scaling ThermoLoop from the lab to real world application. And in my view, it also represents a major milestone and a true inflection point in our company's value. It's a fundamentally different way to make hydrogen and one that could finally offer a practical alternative to traditional electrolyzers. We're now moving quickly from lab demo to pilot plant and ultimately to commercial licensing.
