The AI revolution has a power problem and the energy industry is scrambling to solve it. Hi, I'm Steve Hill, CEO of NewHydrogen, with this week's top hydrogen news. First, a new hydrogen update. The AI buildout is driving one of the fastest surges in electricity demand the world has ever seen. Data centers are projected to consume nearly 12% of total United States electricity by 2030, roughly triple today's share. Grids just can't keep up. That's driving serious investment in on-site power generation, and hydrogen is increasingly part of that conversation.
Our ThermoLoop technology produces clean hydrogen using heat and water instead of expensive electricity. Paired with a compact nuclear reactor, it can support hybrid systems delivering both clean electricity and clean hydrogen from a single heat source. Exactly the kind of always-on, grid-independent energy that data centers and heavy industry need. We're working with NuCube Energy, a DOE nuclear energy launchpad select to explore exactly that combination. As the field of advanced nuclear developers grows, we expect these collaborations to grow with it.
Next, the largest fuel cell order in history just landed. Bloom Energy and Oracle have expanded their agreement to deploy up to 2.8 gigigawatts of fuel cell systems for Oracle's AI data centers across the United States with approximately 1.2 gigigawatts already contracted and deploying. For reference, a single gigawatt powers roughly 750,000 homes. Oracle has committed to more than twice that from one supplier.
Securing a new grid connection for a large data center can take years. Deploying Bloom's modular systems takes months when AI compute demand won't wait. On-site generation wins. The catch, these systems currently run on natural gas.
That works as a bridge, but the logical next step is clean hydrogen. At the right cost, that transition happens fast. That's the unlock ThermoLoop is designed to deliver.
Finally, for the first time ever, a large-scale hydrogen engine is powering a national electricity grid. Finnish technology company Wartsilla began validating its 31H2 engine in Birmio, Spain on June 11th, running on 100% pure hydrogen and feeding power directly into Spain's national grid. A few things make this genuinely different from what's come before. Most hydrogen engine development has been hydrogen ready, meaning engines built for natural gas that can blend up to 25% hydrogen in with more promise later.
That's a hedge. The Wartsilla 31H2 runs on 100% pure hydrogen with zero carbon emissions and it's the world's largest pure hydrogen engine built on a platform customers already know and trust. For grid operators, its flexibility is the key. The engine can ramp from zero to full output in 2 minutes, making it an ideal backup for renewable energy grids when wind and solar drop off. Warts is also positioning it for data centers and heavy industry, tying this story directly to everything we just covered with Bloom and Oracle.
Now, to be fair, the hydrogen powering the test comes from a nearby electrolyzer. And S&P Global pegged the cost of green hydrogen in Spain at over $7 per kilogram on the day of the test. As Wartsa's own leadership put it, "The technology is ready. The missing piece is affordable hydrogen at scale." From AI data centers to the Spanish National Grid, hydrogen is stepping into roles that would have seemed ambitious just a few years ago.
