Moving hydrogen from point A to point B is a thorny problem, but researchers at Australia's Curtin University think they may have the answer. And Australia's renewable energy agency agrees investing $5 million in the concept. So, here's how it works.

Instead of compressing hydrogen gas, liquefying it at extremely low temperatures, or converting it into ammonia, researchers are exploring solid materials that chemically bind hydrogen and release it when needed. In this case, compounds like sodium borohydide can store hydrogen safely in powder form, making it easier to handle and move. Of course, transportation challenges would be far less critical if hydrogen could be produced affordably wherever it's needed. That's where new hydrogen's ThermoLoop could come in.

Designed to produce cheap, clean hydrogen using just water and heat. By making hydrogen onsite, the ThermoLoop approach could reduce the need for long-distance hydrogen transport while driving consumer costs even lower. Cheaper production and better transportation solutions are converging at just the right time because one of hydrogen's most promising and demanding applications is ready to take off, aviation. The question is, will hydrogen-powered aircraft ever be truly competitive? A new market report on hydrogen aircraft predicts impressive sector growth over the next decade.

Forecasts show the sector expanding at close to 30% per year, growing from a niche market today into a multibillion-dollar industry by the mid-2030s. Growth is expected across long haul, medium, and short-range segments with long haul drawing particular attention because batteries simply don't work at those distances. But there's one assumption underlying every optimistic forecast. Hydrogen aviation only works if airlines can access large amounts of clean hydrogen at prices they can absorb. That single factor will determine whether hydrogen aircraft move beyond demonstrations and into real fleets.

Finally, where could clean hydrogen deliver the biggest carbon reductions? According to new research published in New Scientist, hydrogen has its greatest climate impact in heavy industry, especially in steel making and fertilizer production. These sectors rely on coal and natural gas not just for energy but as chemical inputs which makes them tough to fully decarbonize with electricity alone.
