In this week's news, we'll cover how hydrogen is unlocking breakthroughs across industries. From another record- setting project in Saudi Arabia, the world's first hydrogen-based steel railway track, and the secret to massive horsepower in racing. First up, Saudi Arabia is moving forward with a second green hydrogen and ammonia plant, and it's nearly twice the size of the current 2.2 gigawatt NEON project. This new facility in Yanbu will combine 5.4 gigigigawatts of renewables with large-scale electrolysis to produce hydrogen for ammonia exports. It's a bold move that cements the kingdom's intention to become a major player in global hydrogen markets.
If built as described, it could become the largest green hydrogen project in the world. But projects like this raise an important question. Do we really need all that expensive electricity to make clean hydrogen? Not for its design this time, but for its 740 horsepower hydrogen engine. Unlike fuel cell vehicles that generate electricity on board, this hydrogen-powered racer burns gaseous hydrogen in a modified internal combustion engine. The result is high performance with near zero carbon emissions. Alpine sees this approach as a bridge between today's engines and tomorrow's green mobility, offering a familiar platform for racing teams and car makers looking to cut emissions without switching to batteries or fuel cells.
Last up, a hydrogen first in rail. Austria has installed the world's first railway tracks made from hydrogen reduced steel produced by Fullstein using green hydrogen instead of coal. This lowcarbon steel is being tested on a 6 km stretch of track near Lintz. This trial is a major step toward decarbonizing one of the most emission intensive industries in the world, steel making, while supporting cleaner infrastructure for the rail industry itself.
