While the United States federal government debates its next moves on hydrogen, the rest of the world is pushing ahead, investing, building, and proving that hydrogen has a place in the global energy transition. First story today, South Korea is making a major commitment to hydrogen with plans to build the world's largest hydrogen fuel cell power plant. It's a 107.9 megigawatt facility in Yongju that will supply electricity to 270,000 homes. South Korea needs hydrogen. It imports nearly 95% of its energy and has limited land for large-scale renewables. Hydrogen offers a path to greater energy security, reducing dependence on foreign oil and natural gas while supporting its ambitious carbon neutrality goals by 2050.

South Korea isn't alone. Nations like Japan, Singapore, and many others constrained by limited land and/or natural resources are investing in hydrogen to enhance energy security and meet decarbonization goals. Even in Texas, where fossil fuels dominate, we're seeing serious investment in hydrogen infrastructure. Energy Abundance Development Corporation is developing Data City, Texas, a sprawling data center hub near Laredo.

The project will commence with 300 megigigawatts of power in 2026, aiming to expand to 5 gigawatt. Strategically located adjacent to the company's planned hydrogen storage facility, the data center is designed to utilize 100% green energy around the clock.

Finally, moving to the water. Hydrogen is being explored as an alternative to diesel trucking. Researchers at the University of Münster found that for long haul cargo transport, small autonomous hydrogen-powered boats could actually be cheaper and cleaner than diesel, battery, or even hydrogen- powered trucks. It's a solution that could make sense for inland shipping, especially as climate change leads to unpredictable water levels. The fact that researchers are studying hydrogen-powered logistics solutions shows that hydrogen isn't just being looked at for energy.

It's part of a bigger conversation about the future of global transportation. So looking at all these stories, what's the common thread? To me, it seems like infrastructure. Hydrogen isn't just an idea anymore. It's being integrated into power grids, industrial sites, and even supply chains. But for hydrogen to compete at scale, it needs to be cheap.
